REPORT ON THE 6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

<< BACK

The International Conference of the Wah Yan Alumni Associations is a biennial event first started in Hong Kong in 1988. Its purpose is to provide a forum for the world-wide network of Wahyanites to exchange views and ideas for the betterment of Wah Yan College and the alumni. The location of the Conference alternates between Hong Kong and overseas. The 6th International Conference was held in Calgary, Canada on August 1 and 2. The contingent from our Chapter is the largest ever, consisting of Gabriel Lee, Lap-Yan Cheng, David Wong and James Wong. Gabriel and David also brought their wives there for a vacation afterwards in the Canadian Rockies.

Several keynote speeches were given by the staff of Wah Yan College HK and Kowloon. Mr. George Tam, the principal of Wah Yan Hong Kong, and Mr. Percival Ho, a teacher of Wah Yan Kowloon, summarized the current physical and educational environment of their respective school. Rev. Fr. Alfred Deignan, the Jesuit Superior of Hong Kong and Macao, gave an inspirational account of how the ideals of the Jesuits have influenced graduates of schools like Wah Yan. Rev. Fr. George Zee, Supervisor of Wah Yan Kowloon, talked about the global mission of Wah Yan - creating a world that people want to belong. In between speeches were presentations by each of the Wah Yan Alumni Association. There are currently 15 Wah Yan Alumni Associations in 7 countries and 10 Chapters were represented at the Conference.

The Calgary Chapter had done a wonderful job of organizing the conference. We cannot thank them enough for their hospitality. The social events were just as successful as the conference meetings. We had a barbecue in the first evening and a formal dinner and dance party in the following evening. Many of us also took part in a tour of Lake Louise and Banff on the third day. On the whole about 200 people, including family, participated in the activities of the Calgary conference. On Sunday morning, August 2, a special mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church for the conference attendees. A tree dedication ceremony took place afterwards outside the church. Rev. Fr. Deignan unveiled a plague commemorating the occasion of the International Conference.

One of the hottest topics of discussion at the conference was the use of internet to expand and strengthen the contacts among Wahyanites. James Wong is among a core group of people who are going to start the ball rolling. An important decision made at the conference was the transfer of the home base of the International Networking Committee (INC) from Hong Kong to California. The idea is to give the INC a more global outlook rather than being a provincial institution.

The last official business of the conference was the selection of the next conference site. Based on the fact that overseas participation in conferences held in Hong Kong was relatively low, the tradition of having the conference in Hong Kong every 4 years was abandoned. After a lively contest of the attractiveness of their home city, LA won over New York and Toronto the honor to host the next International Conference in the year 2000
